The drawers I made are simple wooden drawers, sliding wood on wooden runners. Metal drawer slides with ball bearings are nice, but add up in terms of cost, and take up more space. The drawers are cut out of 2x4, and 2x8 lumber. For the sides of the drawers,I resawed the 2x4's and 2x8's in half.
I resawed the wood on the table saw. But with a lot of tension in the wood, the resulting wood still needed a bit of planing to flatten it, so I was left with just 16 mm of wood for the drawer side. Still sufficient. To give the rabbet joints in the corners a little more contact area, I made the fronts and backs of the drawers thicker.
I planed these down from the 2x4 and 2x8 to get a reasonable thickness of 28 mm. Even with a reduced thickness, the rabbet was too wide to cut in one pass with my dado blade. So I ended up just cutting it with a regular blade in two passes from two directions. I used a table saw sled , as I usually do to accomplish this. With wooden drawers, there's all kinds of ways of making the drawer slides, such as having a grove in the sides of the drawers.
But with the sides of my drawers only 16 mm thick, cutting a grove into them would not have been a good idea, so decided to just have the drawers slide on their bottom edges. Sliding hardwood on hardwood is best for drawer slides. Except I hadn't made these drawers out of hardwood. So I glued strips of hardwood to the edges of the drawers, on which they would slide in the cabinet. For the drawer bottoms, I actually ended up using some recycled plywood, which was painted on one side.
I had to sand the paint off the edges where I glued the strip of hardwood on. Also note that I used the plywood with the grain going side to side. Seeing that I'm not sliding the drawer on the actual plywood, this didn't matter so much. Making the drawer cabinet Before completely finishing the drawers, I set out to make the 'cabinet'.
The 'cabinet' isn't really a cabinet, because I didn't bother actually enclosing it on any of its sides. It consists of two frames made out of spruce. The uprights are dadoed into the horizontals, with splines dowels connecting the T joints,and splines reinforcing the corners. I used pieces of recycled hardwood for the drawer slides. The drawer slides are attached to the front frame and the back frame, and are the only things that hold the two frames together. The drawer slides are all rabbeted into the uprights.
The dado joint isn't so much for strength, but to help align things when assembling the whole cabinet. I glued a piece of wood between the two drawer slides for the part where they stretch between the two frames. Without that, it was too easy to push the drawer in at a slight angle, which would then cause it to hit the back frame on pushing it in. Attaching the drawer fronts For the drawer fronts, I used the rest of the oak veneer plywood that I used for building a crokinole board I attached the drawer fronts with the drawers actually in the cabinet.
That way, I could align the drawer fronts to each other irrespective of any inaccuracy there might be in the drawer or cabinet itself. See my disclosure page for info on affiliate programs. I started by removing the lower shelf of the table and taking some measurements.
I did this because I knew I wanted to turn that shelf into a pull out drawer. But you can change that to meet your needs as well. The drawer cabinet design is going to be a plywood shell with a divider in the middle. I started by cutting down some plywood on the table saw to make the sides, divider and rails for the shell.
Then I test fitted the sides before moving on. There are four rails connecting the sides, two at the top of the drawers and two below. Then I just used two scraps of the plywood as spacers, and made my cuts. This left me with a perfectly sized rail. After testing the fit, I measured cut the other pieces. Keep in mind that cutting the ends square before making the final cut is always a good habit if you rough cut the plywood.
I setup my Kreg K4 and drilled pocket holes on the ends of all the rails to make the connections to the sides. Then I grabbed the sides and started assembling the drawer cabinet. I clamped the sides together and secured one screw on each end then removed the clamp and secured the other two screws. Then I flipped the sides around and did the same thing for the other top rail. To attach the lower rails I turned the drawer cabinet upside down and used the divider as a spacer.
I cut another piece the same width as the divider so I could use it in this step. Using spacers and relative reference to keep your drawer openings parallel and square is always better than measuring and marking. That said, next I measured and marked for the center divider.
I used a square to position the divider then clamped it in place on the front and back. I flipped the drawer cabinet over checked the center on the divider again. Then I drilled and screwed it into place to the top rails as well. Next I moved the work table back into place, and was ready to put the drawer cabinet in. And as a side note, if you just wanted a solid open bottom you would leave the bottom shelf installed.
The assembly was a perfect fit…maybe too perfect actually. So you probably want to check your base before you start to install the drawers. The drawers will be inset in the workbench frame, but overlaid on the drawer cabinet that I just put them in. So I pushed the box back the thickness of the plywood drawer fronts then secured it to the side and the top bracing with countersunk screws.
This gave me a place to secure the back of the cabinet box on the top and bottom. I used the same spacer trick on my miter saw to cut the tray front and back to size as well as the sides and inner bracing. Then I clamped the parts down on my bench. But sometimes design and aesthetics override optimal screw placement. But first I needed to cut the full size piece off it for the stationary back area.
Since it already had countersunk holes in it I just reattached it in place in the same spots. Next I needed to cut the leftover shelf piece to fit the pull out tray. This is the perfect spot to use the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System. Basically you can use the track to cut straight lines or set stops 90 degrees to the track to make square cuts on wide panels like this.
It installs like any other drawer slide though and I attached it to the sides. Next I started cutting the parts for the drawers.
